THIS report covers the accounts and activities of the department from 1st April, 1957 to 31st March, 1958.

TERMINATION OF FUNCTIONS OF

CUSTODIAN OF PROPERTY

1. The following assets reverted to the Crown upon the enactment of the Custodian of Property (Termination of Functions) Ordinance in May, 1957:

(a) Abandoned Leasehold Property

Leasehold property N.K.I.L. 1759 and building thereon (No. 149, Fuk Wah Street, Kowloon).

(b) Liquid Assets

(c) Outstanding Claims

(a) JAPANESE

2. Control is vested in the Administrator of Japanese Property, but the arrangement whereby the Custodian exercises management continued.

All properties were occupied on a rental basis as follows:

By the Army

17, 19, 21, 23 and 25, Conduit Road;

39 and 41, Macdonnell Road, and

3 and 4, Minden Row;

By the Royal Navy

1, 3 and 3A, Magazine Gap Road.

By Civilians

27, Conduit Road.

Receipts and payments in respect to these are detailed at Appendix I.

Assets

(b) GERMAN

In accordance with the Distribution of German Enemy Property Regulations, 1957 the following German assets were handed over to the Accountant General on 12th October, 1957:

Cash Balance

Unrealized assets:

(i) 980 shares in Helm Brothers, Ltd.

(ii)

$1,027,654.12

6 cheques drawn on Hamburg in August, 1939 totalling Reichmarks 4,835.57.

5. Mr. J. A. Tibble, Assistant Custodian of Enemy Property, departed on leave on 4th January, 1958, at the completion of his Agreement.

Mr. E. J. Thompson relinquished his appointment as Custodian of Property with effect from May 9th, 1957 on the enactment of the Custodian of Property (Termination of Functions) Ordinance, 1957.

The above Balance Sheet has been examined in accordance with paragraph 10 of the Secretary of State's Circular Despatch (2) of 18th January, 1940. I have received all the information and explana- tions that I have required, and I certify, as a result of this audit, that in my opinion the Balance Sheet is correct.

2. Explanatory notes on the transactions for the year and on the principal items in the Balance Sheet will be found in the Custodian's Annual Report dated 2nd June, 1958. I have no further comments.
