REQUISITIONING
For the purposes of this Report, requisitioning is dealt with under four heads:
(A) Property Requisitioned during the 1945/6
Military Administration.
At the end of last year a total of 58 units was held under requisition, divided between Government and the Service as follows:
Royal Navy 2, Army 9, R.A.F. 12,
Government 35.
During the year under review 8 units have been derequisitioned by Government and 2 units by the R.A.F. thus reducing the units held under requisition to 48. The position at the end of the year was as follows:
Royal Navy 2, Army 91, R.A.F. 10,
Government 261.
(B) Property Requisitioned by Government to relieve the housing shortage.
No further requisitioning for this purpose has taken place and there was no derequisitioning so that the total number of units held under requisition is still 29.
(C) Property Requisitioned by Government since the Military Administration.
At the end of last year there were 11 units held under re- quisition. During the year; the Army transferred 8 units (comprising 8 flats in Kowloon) to the Government, making a total held under requisition 19. However, these 8 units were de-requisitioned later in the year and the total reduced to 11. There is therefore no change from last year.
1
(D)
Property Requisitioned for the Services since
1st May 1949.
During the year 11 units were derequisitioned for the Army and 12 units were requisitioned, 11 for the Army and 1 for the R.A.F., making a net gain of 1 unit. The 12 units requisitioned by the Army and R.A.F. were all in respect of land in the New Territories.
However, during the year, 8 flats were transferred by the Army to Government making a net decrease of 7 units. This reduces the total of 190 for last year to a total of 183 at the end of the year under review.
follows:
The 183 units were divided between the Services as
Royal Navy 6, Army 131, R.A.F. 46.
CONTROL OF HOTELS
2. As stated in last year's Report, the Hotels (Repeal) Ordinance No. 32 of 1951, came into operation on the 21st September, 1951.
3. On September 7th, 1952, the one year's concession to Hong Kong residents who were residing in the 24 controlled hotels prior to the date when the repealing Bill was first published came to an end. The immediate effect was that the majority of the hotels increased the room rates 50%-75%.
4. A further effect of the decontrol was the increase in the charges for meals. A few of the second class hotels have pegged their prices but in the better type of hotel the charges have been increased 100%.
OFFICE ACCOMMODATION
5. There has been an increasing demand for Government office accommodation during the year.

With the appointment of a large number of additional officers, expansion is a natural result and strenuous efforts have been made to provide the additional office space required.
7.
As a result, Government offices are still widely dis- persed and to a great extent are housed in requisitioned or rented premises.
ACCOMMODATION OF GOVERNMENT OFFICERS

8. During the year there has been a further increase of 25 quarters over last year's total of 277 non-departmental quarters. Details are as follows:

Hotels.
11. The improvement shown in last year's Report was not maintained during the year under review-in fact the number of officers accommodated in hotels rose to 84 (46 single and 38 married, of whom 18 had children), the highest number ever recorded. The lowest figures recorded, 27 (14 single and 13 married, 7 with children) was much higher than last year.
12. This situation was somewhat relieved by the approving of many Private Tenancies; these had increased from 15 at the beginning of the year to 34 at the end of the year.
13. Since the number of new appointments coming from U.K. showed no signs of decreasing this form of accommodating officers in suitable quarters became the only immediate remedy and the total number of Private Tenancies will show an increase in next year's Report.
Hostels.
14. There has been no change in the position regarding the four Government hostels.
(i) Arlington Hostel (ii) The Hermitage
(iii) Macdonnell Road Hostel (iv) Buxey Lodge
primarily for married officers,
for single women only,
for single men only, for single men only.
15. The four hostels were fully occupied during the year.
16. Table III gives the number of officers in Hotels and Hostels at the end of the year.
STAFF
17. No changes took place during the year under review.
